Maidstone Mountaineering Club
Welcome to our club website. Joining a club is a great way to meet new people with that adventurous spirit, advance your climbing skills and see new parts of the UK and abroad.
Discover rock climbing & Mountaineering.
Hiking, Scrambling, Bouldering, Sport Climbing, Trad Climbing and social events with friends.
Maidstone Mountaineering Club was formed in 1976. Members tend to meet regularly at Climbing Walls, usually either the Climbing Experience in Maidstone or The Reach in Woolwich.
Activities of the club vary from indoor bouldering, top-roping on the local sandstone crags to sport and traditional (trad) climbing on mountain crags and sea cliffs all over the UK and abroad. Over the years, members have climbed big Alpine Routes, tackled Scottish snow and ice, opened up new crags in Morocco, basked in the holiday sun of Spain or Kalymnos and trekked in the Himalayas. There’s something for everyone in our friendly club including walks, cycle rides and social events, although the majority of regular group activities are climbing.
If you are interested and would like to know more, fill out the form on the contact page and we will get in contact. You may wish to join us at The Climbing Experience on our regular Wednesday night meets or at The Reach in Woolwich, although you would need to carry out an introduction course or be an experienced belayer here.

Rock Climbing Equipment and Safety Precautions
Before embarking on your rock climbing adventure, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the necessary equipment and safety precautions. The right gear can make all the difference in ensuring a safe and enjoyable climb. Our members can advise you on what equipment is required as you gain experience. In addition to having the right equipment, it’s crucial to understand and follow proper safety protocols.
Learning how to tie knots, use belay devices, and communicate effectively with your climbing partner are essential skills that will ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Before you climb a lead wall you will have to undertake a basic belay course, provided by The Reach at Woolwich or F51 in Folkestone. Once completed you are good to go.
Essentials to never forget are: Always remember to double-check your harness and equipment as well as your partners, communicate clearly with your climbing partner, and be aware of your surroundings at all times. With the right gear and safety precautions in place, you can climb with confidence and peace of mind.
The Different Types of Rock Climbing Routes
One type of route is the “sport climbing” route. These routes are equipped with permanent anchors and bolts, making them relatively safe for climbers. Sport climbing allows you to focus on the technical aspects of climbing without the added stress of placing your own gear. It’s a great way to build confidence and improve your skills.
Another type of route is the “traditional” or “trad” climbing route. In trad climbing, climbers place their own protective gear, such as cams and nuts, into cracks and crevices in the rock. Trad climbing requires not only physical strength but also the ability to assess the rock’s features and choose the right gear placements. It’s a more traditional and adventurous form of climbing that allows for greater creativity and problem-solving.
Bouldering is yet another popular form of rock climbing that involves climbing short, challenging routes without the use of ropes. Bouldering is all about strength, technique, and problem-solving. It’s a great way to improve your climbing skills and build upper body strength.
